AT MORTON: Lane Tech defeated Morton 6-5 in nine innings to win
its first regional championship after coming up short the last two
years.
The Indians (27-6) had ace Couri Benz on the mound, but Morton
(15-20) kept it close.
In the third inning, Morton's Dave Warner scored from second when
catcher Enes Bektasevic couldn't find a passed ball.
Morton's Zach Clement hit a double and Elliott Pisarczyk hit a
400-foot homer to center. Designated hitter Mike Campolattara followed
with a homer to right field. Lane got a run when Dave Warner walked
Josh Colon with the bases loaded making it 4-2 through three innings.
Warner pitched a solid game with seven strikeouts and four hits
in six innings, but things changed in the seventh.
With one out, Bektasevic hit a triple, Dan Serrano walked and Benz
hit a homer to right to tie the game at 5-5.
With one out in the eighth, Serrano doubled, Benz was intentionally
walked and William Davila pounded Mike Gariffo's offering for a
double to left-center to end the game.
We had so many guys come through when they had to today,"
Lane coach Jeff Szukala said. There were a few times it didn't look
good, but our guys came picked it up when they had to."
